Description
This beautiful wool comes from the beautiful alpine landscape of South Tyrol, the German-speaking northernmost part of Italy. Shaved, washed and carded by a small family business, which has been processing this wool for more than 65 years into beautiful yarns, carpets, blankets, mattresses and pillows and traditional clothing, slippers and hats.
Traditional natural product
After shaving, the wool is washed without harmful agents and air-dried. In this way a very large part of the natural sheep fat (lanolin) is preserved. The coats of dark sheep are usually a lot fatter than that of the light ones. The washed wool of the different coat colors is mixed and carded into different natural shades. Carding is done on an almost 100-year-old carding mill that is carefully maintained by the family. White furs are the starting point for the dyed wool, which is produced in many colors, some subtly mixed. The colored wool is dyed in Germany according to the okotex-100 standard. Due to the high proportion of lanolin, the color can sometimes turn out less even when dyeing than you are used to from large-scale industrially dyed wool.
Responsible choice
Tyrolean Mountain Sheep, like most European wools, is not as fine as the merino wool that comes from further away. But this wool does have excellent felting properties. If you are looking for a beautiful, sturdy wool, then this is an excellent, responsible choice.
