Mulberry Silk Hankies

 6.85 433.80

Thin fleece of mulberry silk for dyeing, spinning or felting.

Hankies are thin webs of mulberry silk. They are also called Mawata, which is Japanese for "spread out". Hankies are made by soaking the silk glue from the cocoons and then pulling them apart and stretching them in several layers over a frame of approx. 25 x 25 cm. This creates a fleece the size of a handkerchief. Hence the name hankie (= short for handkerchief).

Using hankies is easy. You can create interesting effects and textures with it in your felt work. But you can also spin the hankies or use them to make tissue paper.

The hankies are packed in bags of about 10 or 50 grams. These each contain a varying number of hankies, because the number of layers is not always the same.

Description

Usage

Use several layers or pull the hankies apart into a thinner membrane, even as fine as a spider's web. You can make them nice and smooth again with an iron if you want. If necessary, use some talcum powder or lotion on your hands to prevent the thin silk threads from getting caught on your hands.

Paint yourself

You can easily paint the hankies yourself with silk paint to achieve beautiful color effects. This can be done by stretching the fleece and painting it with a brush, by submerging the whole in the paint, or by spraying beautiful gradient shades with the funpump.
